About Us

History of MR Label Co.

Early DaysEarly Days

Pat Meehan Sr. had worked in the label business for eleven years. He had always been very dedicated to his work. Pat, with encouragement from his wife Carol, discussed the possibility of starting his own label company.

In the spring of 1976, Pat and Carol Meehan put those words into action, and started MR Label Co. For the next 33 years they worked side by side with the growing company. For the first three years, the company operated out of their basement. It held the office, raw stock, inventory and shipping department. It was most certainly not an easy ride, but one with new adventures at every turn.

In the beginning, Carol worked from that basement office as their accountant and customer service representative, while raising four young children. Pat spent most of his days making outside sales calls, working to develop the business. His evenings were spent doing estimates, layout sheets and entering those precious orders.

Great Growth

Astonishingly, the couple was able to run MR Label Co. out of their basement from 1976 to 1979 without any presses.

MR Label Co. developed close relationships with offset, screen and flexographic label printers as well as prepress companies for artwork, filmwork, flexo plates and screens. The only equipment they owned in those early years was finishing equipment (a guillotine, back splitter, and die cutter).

First Five Years

The first five years MR Label Co. was in business were the most difficult for Pat and Carol, as they worked to establish their company.

In 1979, the couple was able to purchase their first screen printing press, and moved into space they rented behind a bar called Tiny Bubbles, in Mt. Airy, OH. The small warehouse only had 900 square feet, but the couple put every inch of it to good use.

After becoming a corporation in 1981, the company bought its first flexographic printing press and that forced them to purchase a building in the Northside section of Cincinnati.

The First Facility

This was a big step for MR Label Co. Pat had experience in marketing, estimating and selling labels, but knew nothing about running the presses that produce them. This did not hinder their success at all; rather it gave Pat another challenge.

With the help from old friends in the label business and new friends in Printing Industries of America, MR Label Co. became a manufacturer of screen-printed and flexographic printed labels. This also led to the development of a great relationship with Cincinnati State, a local college. MR Label Co. became its first co-op partner for their “Flexographic Printing Program.”

MR Label Co. has worked closely with that department and the instructors at Cincinnati State, even training them on presses, and has greatly influenced their printing program. As a result, MR Label Co. continues to hire qualified co-op students from Cincinnati State, and continues to give back to help enrich the development of the program.

A Full In-House Operation

In 1987, MR Label Co. became a fully in-house operational label company, after replacing its conventional photographic camera and plate making equipment with state-of-the-art computer driven digital equipment. It added new and larger screen-printing and flexographic printing presses as the needs of its client base continued to grow.

In 1990, MR Label Co. moved into its current facility with 19,000 square feet, still in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Pat and Carol retired in 2008 but have left the business in the capable hands of their children, Kathy, Pat Jr., Tim, and Brigid, who literally grew up around the business. They all spent their summers in the shop helping in any way they could, and upon college graduation they worked full time. (Kathy did not stay with the family company, but pursued her dreams of becoming a doctor.)

Today

Since 1976, MR Label Co., has been producing custom labels, currently servicing customers across the nation and internationally.

Pat and Carol Meehan attribute their success to the wonderful employees (many of which of have been with the company from the early days), and to more than just a few customers who have remained loyal since the beginning. MR Label Co. continues to excel in the manufacturing of labels for packaging, industrial and OEM applications as well as UL/cUL/CSA licensed label applications and eagerly looks forward to the new challenges of today’s markets.

Patrick Meehan Jr.

an Ohio University graduate, has been working at the MR Label Co. since he was a teenager. He has done it all; mixing inks (there are still stains in the shop), “helping” the press operators, blacktopping the driveway, even taking out the garbage. He learned the business from his father, Pat Sr. and when he retired in 2007, Pat Jr. became President. Pat Jr. is an avid sports fan! He loves his Bobcat football, Xavier basketball, and the Reds & Bengals. Pat volunteers as the vice-president at the St. James Credit Union, a board member for a LaSalle High School Scholarship program, and serves as a little league baseball coach. Most of all, he loves spending time with his wife Barb, and their four children Max, Amanda, Mackenzie, and Ben.

He enjoys biking, hiking and traveling to National Parks. He is also very active with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation helping raise money for Type 1 Diabetes research. He loves the Cincinnati Reds (he secretly wishes he owned a major league baseball team!) and is moderately excited about the Bengals. While working at MR Label Co. as a teenager, one of his favorite memories is painting the second story of a 100 year old building while lying on his stomach and hanging over the roof top edge. Tim and his wife, Halle, have three daughters and two dogs.

What is the average turn around time for a new job?

MR Label Co.’s average turn around time is 7 to 8 days; however, we prefer a 10 business day lead time. As we do carry a wide variation of materials in our shop, extra lead time ensures we can obtain any inks, substrates, and/or tooling we might need. The requested time also allows us time to get your artwork approved and ready for production.

What is the preferred artwork file?

Vector files for making plates and screens:  Adobe Illustrator (.ai), Adobe Acrobat (.pdf), Adobe Indesign (.indd), and Adobe Photoshop (.psd) If we need to make changes to your art files, please package all links and fonts and send with your native file. If no changes are needed or anticipated, please outline all fonts and embed all art within the native file.

For variable databases Microsoft Excel is acceptable, and when sending simple text, Microsoft Word is acceptable.

Raster files are acceptable only for digitally printed labels: Adobe Photoshop (.psd), jpg embedded art, etc.

See below for a better understanding of Vector vs. Raster.

What is a PMS color?

PMS (Pantone Matching System) is a universal and standard color matching system that is used across the world. Each color is given a specific number, such as PMS 185 Red. That number has a specific mixing formula, in which pressmen use in order to create that ink. The formula also varies depending on the substrate the inks are printed on (coated versus uncoated). These guidelines ensure that when customers give us a PMS color, every printer produces the same color no matter where they are in the world.

What is 4 color process printing (CMYK)?

This is a universal system used within the graphic arts and commercial printing industry. An image is separated into 4 different colors: cyan (C), magenta (M), yellow (Y), and black (K), thus creating CMYK. Printers will color separate your art file when prepping your job for press. If the job is being run flexographically, we will make 4 different plates (one for each color separation). Each plate will be mounted to the press, and the material will pass through each ink station transferring each color individually to the material via tiny dots. The dots will then overlap and create your image. This same system is used when jobs are printed digitally; however, 4 different print heads are used.

What is a spot color?

A spot color can be a PMS color, or it is a special color match that a press operator has to formulate themselves. Printers will use a spot color when something in the image cannot be regenerated using CMYK. This sometimes occurs on more vibrant colors, or if a company has a specific color in their logo/artwork that doesn’t visually look correct when printed CMYK. Printers sometimes use spot colors to save on ink consumption. If it is a long-running job and a large portion of the artwork can be created using a spot color versus printing CMYK in that area, less ink will be used. Another reason for using spot colors is to reduce the number of colors needed to print the job. If our art department can take your 4 color process artwork, and color separate it into two spot colors, you will need fewer printing plates. The job can potentially be run on a smaller printing press, thus a cost savings for you.

What does roll chart mean?

The roll chart of a label is critical for automatically applied labels. This refers to orientation of the label on the roll, and how the label will come off of the printing press. The picture below, shows you how your artwork will read on the roll with each different roll chart option. Roll chart options (#1-4) are the most common and considered outside wind. Meaning your outwork is showing on the outside of the roll as you unwind it. Roll chart options (#5-8) are considered inside wind. Thus, you can only see the liner on the outside, and your artwork is wound facing the inside of the roll.

What is RCR?

RCR stands for round corner radius. This refers to the amount of curve a label has on its corner edges. A common corner radius is (.125”). This will help the label from peeling off when objects rub across them, in comparison to a square corner label.
