Standards Organizations and Labeling Requirements: What Do ANSI, GHS, UL, CSA, ETL, RoHS, and NRTLs Mean?
When it comes to compliance and industrial labeling, there’s no shortage of acronyms. ANSI, GHS, UL, CSA, ETL, RoHS, and NRTLs can all play a role in determining what information appears on a product—and sometimes, how that information needs to perform over time.
The tricky part is that these terms don’t all mean the same thing.
Some establish standards. Some regulate how information is communicated. Others test and certify products. And certification marks can come with their own requirements for how they’re used.
Here’s how they fit together—and what they can mean for your labels.
Standards, Regulations, Testing, and Certification: What’s the Difference?
Before getting into the individual acronyms, it helps to understand the bigger picture.
A standard provides guidelines or requirements for how something should be designed, tested, or communicated. A regulation can establish legal requirements that manufacturers must follow.
A testing or certification organization may evaluate products against applicable safety standards. In the United States, certain organizations are recognized by OSHA as Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) to perform specific product testing and certification activities. Names such as UL, CSA, and Intertek are commonly associated with this type of testing and certification.
Finally, a certification mark can communicate that a product has been tested or certified by an NTRL to applicable requirements. That distinction matters because simply adding a mark to a label isn’t the same thing as meeting the requirements behind it.
ANSI and GHS: Communicating Safety and Hazards
Both ANSI and GHS deal with communicating hazards, but they generally apply to different types of situations.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is associated with standards used across many industries. The ANSI Z535 series, for example, provides guidance for communicating safety information through elements such as signal words, colors, symbols, and label layouts.
GHS, or the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, focuses specifically on communicating chemical hazards.
Depending on the applicable requirements, a GHS label may include:
- Hazard pictograms
- Signal words
- Hazard statements
- Precautionary statements
- Product identifiers
- Supplier information
Whether the label is warning someone about a hazard on a piece of equipment or communicating the risks associated with a chemical, the goal is the same: make important safety information clear and easy to recognize.
UL, CSA, and ETL: More Than Just Logos
UL, CSA, and Intertek (ETL) are names commonly associated with product testing and certification. You may see their marks on electrical equipment, appliances, industrial products, and other items that have been evaluated to applicable safety requirements.
But these marks aren’t simply logos that can be dropped into a label design.
Depending on the certification and application, there may be requirements surrounding how a mark is reproduced, where it appears, what other product information must accompany it, and how long the label must remain attached and legible.
That last point is especially important for label construction. If a certification or safety label needs to remain readable throughout the expected life of a product, factors like the label material, adhesive, ink, printing process, and protective finish all matter.

RoHS: Compliance Beyond the Label
RoHS, or the Restriction of Hazardous Substances, is a little different from the other topics on this list.
Unlike ANSI, GHS, or product certification programs, RoHS is primarily concerned with restricting certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The focus is on the product and its components; not simply the appearance or durability of the label.
Depending on the product and market, manufacturers may use specific markings, declarations, or documentation to communicate compliance.
The important thing to remember is that putting “RoHS Compliant” on a label doesn’t make a product compliant. The product itself must meet the applicable requirements.

What Do These Requirements Mean for Your Label?
Compliance labels can communicate much more than a product name or company logo. Depending on the application, a label may need to include:
- Certification marks
- Model or serial numbers
- Electrical ratings
- Manufacturer information
- Safety warnings
- Hazard pictograms
- Traceability or date codes
- Regulatory or compliance information
But getting the information right is only part of the job. The label also has to survive its intended environment.
A label on office equipment may face very different conditions than one on industrial machinery, electrical equipment, outdoor products, or chemical containers. Heat, cold, moisture, chemicals, UV exposure, and abrasion can all affect how well a label performs over time.
That’s why compliance labeling isn’t just about artwork. The label construction matters too.

- Does the label need to include a specific certification mark?
- Are there requirements for how that mark is reproduced?
- Does the label need to remain legible for the life of the product?
- What environmental conditions will it face?
- Are specific materials or label systems required?
ANSI, GHS, UL, CSA, ETL, RoHS, and NRTLs may represent different parts of the compliance landscape, but they all point to the same bigger consideration: making sure products communicate the right information and meet the applicable requirements.
